Harley F. Cotton, Jr., 82

Born on March 8, 1942, in Lincoln, Nebraska, Harley Cotton was the son of Harley Sr. and Winona (Smith) Cotton. During World War II, his father served overseas, and Harley spent some of his childhood living with his grandparents in Raymond. As a teenager, Harley was known for his passion for cars, famously driving one through his high school halls. He was active in high school sports, playing football, managing the basketball team, running track, and earning a reputation as the quintessential 1950s "nice guy." He graduated in 1960.

Harley served in the Army Reserves for 38 years, with a brief stint on active duty during the Vietnam War. During his service, he had to part with his beloved 1964 Corvette because the Army’s pay of $110 per month was insufficient to cover his car payment of $127. His service was marked by various adventures, which his grandson Will can recount. He retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 3.
Following his military career, Harley worked for the Gas Company of Lincoln for 44 years, becoming a well-known and respected figure in his community.

In 1972, Harley met his future wife, Helen Kovas, at Bill Bailey’s bar in Benson. They married and had two children and six grandchildren. Harley, affectionately known as "Bucko," was a devoted grandfather. He cherished time at the lake, where he enjoyed having his family around, fixing things, and preparing the golf carts for family fun. In his later years, Harley took pleasure in watching sports, Hallmark movies, the Food Channel, and reading car books.

Throughout his life, Harley prioritized his family, always eager to hear about their lives and activities. Even during his most challenging days, he remained interested in others, asking about their days and well-being. In his final years, he was cared for by several dedicated caregivers, particularly Bobbi, Stephanie, and AK, whom he deeply appreciated.

Preceded in death by his wife Elena D. (Kovas) Cotton; parents Harley F. Sr. and Winona Cotton; and sister Phyllis Pearson

Survived by daughters Julia Hoult (Jason), and Natalie Wheeler (Matt); 6 grandchildren; brother Dave Cotton (Pat)
