Bernard J. "Bernie" McCoy, 94

Bernie attended St. Mary’s Grade School (Omaha) and Omaha South High School. He and Margaret Ann Pritchard were married on February 5, 1955, at St. Mary’s Church. From a young age, he loved roller skating at Crosstown Roller Rink and went on to win a medal at the National Championship. He told the story several times about the night “a famers daughter from Spalding, Nebraska walked into Crosstown and changed the course of my life forever”.

He began as a “runner” for the Omaha Stockyards. He then worked for a time for the Star Commission Firm, eventually opening his own cattle business in the Fall of 1954. Bernie was the last person out of the Omaha Exchange Building in 1999 as he locked the door behind him. He loved his 54 years there.

In addition to his career as a Livestock Dealer, he went to work for Skateland/Skate City in Bellevue in 1971, where he'd spend the next 50 years. The kids he met eventually became his second family and he referred to them as “his kids”. Remarkably, most of those kids kept in touch with him all these years later.

Bernie and Margaret were founding parishioners of St. Bernadette Catholic Church. Bernie was on the first Parish Council and Festival Committee.

Bernie was preceded in death by 2 infant children, Kathleen and William; parents Mark and Mary “Toots” McCoy; brother Tom; and 2 infant brothers.

Survived by his wife of 69 years, Margaret A. McCoy (Pritchard); children Dennis, Colleen LeVier (Scott), and Sheila McCoy (Tom) of San Diego, CA; granddaughter Kelly LeVier; brothers and sisters-in-law Gerard and Kathy Pritchard of Bellevue, Joann Pritchard of St. Paul, NE, Ray Vlasin of East Lansing, MI, Kathy McCoy of Omaha; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials requested to St. Bernadette Church, St. Mary’s Church – Omaha, and Stephen Center – Omaha.
