Weston Daniel Hill, 95
Weston D. Hill, a World War II Veteran, softball hall of famer, devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2023, at the age of 95 years.
Born on February 8, 1928, "Danny" was raised on the ball fields of South Omaha and quickly became one of Omaha's top softball players, winning two state championships pitching for Omaha South High School. After graduating high school in 1945, he joined the United States Army Air Force. Stationed in Osaka, Japan, his love for sports persisted and he continued to play softball while overseas. His exceptional talent earned him a spot as starting pitcher for the Iowa City Cardinals professional fastpitch team. Although he had the opportunity to pursue a professional career, he decided to return home to South Omaha and, for the next 18 years, played in the city's top league, the Greater Omaha League.
Dan's contributions to softball were recognized by the Amateur Softball Association of America. In 1972, he was honored with a place in the Hall of Fame, a testament to his talent and lasting impact on the sport. His induction into the Omaha Softball Hall of Fame in 1996 further solidified his legacy as a true legend on the field.
Dan's life off the field revolved around his family. Dan's love story with his wife, Gloria, spanned seven decades. Dan and Glo weathered life's challenges and celebrated its joys as a devoted team of two. He and Gloria raised their three children, Daniel, Michaela, and Tommy in their home in South Omaha, where he worked as a statistician for Union Pacific Railroad until he retired.
Dan is preceded in death by his parents John G. Hill and Ruth Hill (Daniels); wife Gloria A. Hill (Buglewicz); and son Daniel S. Hill.
He is survived by sister Carole; daughter Michaela (Ernie) Bredar; son Tom (Peggy) Hill; grandchildren Kristin (Matt) Petrick, Lauren (Ryan Meyer) Hill, Kelli (David) Blank, Lindsey (Jake) Betsworth, Julia Hill and T.J. Hill; great-grandchildren Kaitlyn, Zachary, and Ethan Blank, Ella and Madeline Petrick, and Vincent and Wyatt Betsworth.
May our dearest friend, father, and grandpa rest in peace, reunited with loved ones we've lost.
In lieu of flowers, memorials requested to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
