Jay  G.  Pedersen
July 4, 1960 -  April 23, 2023

Jay G. Pedersen, 62

Jay Gerard Pedersen, born July 4, 1960, passed away after an accident in his Omaha home on Sunday, April 23, 2023.

As a software engineer, Jay had a long career that allowed him to work in many diverse domains, including geospacial projects, some of the first gas pumps to accept credit card payments, designing and implementing the algorithms that ran AOL’s news feed as well as many health care related projects at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Jay was a lifelong learner, with multiple degrees in Computer Science. He persuaded a degree in education, but pivoted and obtained a master’s degree in mathematics.

An active bicyclist, Jay enjoyed riding hundreds of miles on his bike across the roads of Nebraska and Iowa, especially when the ride would go through some of his different Iowa home towns, including LeMars. He also enjoyed cooking for his family, friends and church members; adapting his mother’s famous baked spaghetti recipe and turning out hundreds of pounds of corned beef for St. Patrick’s day celebrations.

Jay was a genuinely good person with a generous heart. He was always there when needed, with a smile, a computer and a keyboard in tow, so he could help, work and entertain. Jay was an animal lover, rescuing many stray cats and kittens over the years and recently adopting a very sassy corgi.

Jay was also an avid musician, singing in his church choir, acting as a cantor for St. Mary's Church and singing at 5:00pm mass with his nephew, Joseph Krupa accompanying on the organ. He sang in multiple groups over the years covering many genres including a one time performance with a KISS/Queen tribute band. If anyone has pictures of that last one, the family would appreciate it.

He was preceded in death by parents Lois Shea Pedersen and Paul Pedersen and is survived by his wife of 35 years, Kathy Eipperle Pedersen and son Daniel as well as his four siblings David, Mark, Lori Graves and Amy Cross and many nieces, and nephews, including his special nephew Ben.

He was a wonderful brother and friend and his presence in this world will be sorely missed.
