Stephen M. Mortenson, Sr., 72, of Fremont, Nebraska, passed away Thursday, January 5, 2023.
Stephen was born to Robert and Delores Mortenson, February 6, 1950, in Omaha, Nebraska. After graduating from Platteview High School, he enlisted with the United States Navy as an aviation mechanic. He served two years before being honorably discharged. After military service, Stephen studied at carpentry trade school and became on Omaha Construction union member, drywalling for many years around the Omaha area.
Stephen is survived by his four children; Stephen Mortenson, Jr., Jayme Kelly (Chad), Tracey Mortenson (Chris), and Jeffery Mortenson. He is also survived by ten grandchildren; Katie, Zachary, Daija, Ruth, Mercedes, Haiven, Cameron, Megan, Abbey, and Paige. Stephen also has one surviving great-grandchild; Cullen. He is also survived by his sisters; Sandra Fletcher (Larry), Susan Dehaven (Verne), Jill Merchen (Ross). Stephen was preceded in death by his parents; Robert and Delores.
He enjoyed spending his later years building puzzles and fishing with friends and his children when they came to town. He had many hobbies that included woodworking, lawn care and gardening. He was a wonderful caregiver, for fourteen years, to his late father Robert Mortenson.
Stephen fought his battle at the Omaha VA Hospital for fifty-five long days. Despite much of that time, he never lost his sense of humor. Throughout his journey, he enjoyed video chatting with his children living out of state. He perked up every time he got those calls. He will be missed immensely and loved eternally.
