Sedlacek, great-grandson, Carter G. Mayer; cousin Eva Sebkova, Prague, CZ; extended family and friends.
Born July 16, 1924, Prague, Czechoslovakia. Growing up in the first Czech Republic, Karel enjoyed cycling the Bohemian countryside, and summers along the Berounka River. He studied voice at Prague Charles University with Stanislav Muz, planning for a career in opera. WWII intervened and Karel and his parents escaped post-war Communism, spending two years in German and Italian refugee camps. He continued his vocal studies in Italy with Mr. Carella, a fine organist and voice teacher before coming to America in 1951, where he and his parents were sponsored by the Johnson family of Crete, Nebraska. They later moved to Omaha where Karel met his future wife, and love of his life, Victory while singing together at Sokol Hall on Martha Street. Trained as a musician, he sang opera, and played the violin and piano. He loved the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, taking his family to yearly vacations in Estes Park. Dad was passionate about politics having lived through the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia. A practical, intellectual, determined and unfailingly cheerful man, he loved his family unreservedly, caring for his mother, wife, and sisters-in-law. Dad worked for many years at Swift & Co. until his retirement. He remained independent until a recent illness, driving to errands and his favorite daily walks at Omaha Seymour Smith, and Papillion Halleck Parks. Dad was a great example for his children. He will be in our hearts always.
